The other day I went to hear a splendid BSO performance of Mahler's massive Third Symphony, and all the way home from the concert found myself humming Tom Lehrer's "Alma."

I really can't argue with this.

It occurred to me today that to have married Gustav Mahler, Walter Gropius, and Franz Werfel, she most likely had had a ton of accomplishments of her own, so I looked her up and, yeah. Composer. Despite partial hearing loss from childhood measles. Also, the whole family was part of that scene – her father, and after his death, her stepfather, were both painters. Her stepfather’s friend Klimt also fell for her, though ultimately they ended up as friends instead. Lehrer left out a relationship with Oskar Kokoschka. One of her daughters became a sculptor. Really, I feel like the real takeaway here is “everybody knew everybody.”

I knew that mostly because Mahler was so terrible at having two composers in the family, which I was sorry to learn. I like his music and, in several of his photographs, his face.

Her stepfather’s friend Klimt also fell for her, though ultimately they ended up as friends instead.

And that's wonderful, because it means they were both people who could have friends as well as partners. Thanks for telling me.

Really, I feel like the real takeaway here is “everybody knew everybody.”

Ayup.
